So, Tell Me
I want to know you. The real, secret you.
I want to read your mind’s script.
Show me your play list. Who do you love?
What about friends? What’s your deal?
I want to know what you do in private
and tell no one. What was your childhood like?
When did you decide to be you?
Who do you hate? What was
your relationship with your parents?
Do you swear? Ever been sexually molested?
How many sex partners do you have?
Tell me your favorite everything.
I’d ask you what you think of me,
but that’s none of my business.
Look both ways at people.
It’s okay to wonder and to imagine.
But mind the gaps.
Not everything makes sense or is what you expect it to be.
I reckon you may well end up with a black eye when she, or he, receives this!

Wouldn’t be my first. Thanks for the warning, Peter.

I don’t think I have answers for most of these questions. But thanks for asking.

Goodness, that took a dark turn at the last stanza! With a wry twist at the end. Very clever write, Bill. Creepy yet clever! 🙂

Great take on the prompt Bill – love the last two lines – perfect! 🙂

but that’s none of my business.’

I actually love this (even the last line that reads like a challenge). How wonderful to have someone that interested in you and your life …

What seems like true interest ends up feeling very invasive. I love how it builds to deeper and more probing questions, turning this into something less lovely.
We say we wish someone knew the real us but really, do we? I think we would prefer they learn about us in a less direct way 🙂
Love how you did this, Bill.

Thank you, Dale. Inspired from an essay in The New Yorker magazine.
