Gray Matter
Nuance is the difference
between sage and schmuck,
between friend and foe,
between dusk and dawn,
between lust and love,
between wine and whine,
between fortune and folly,
between poetry and prose.
What is between
black and white?
Look both ways for discernment and wisdom.
Mind the gaps, lest life be a fool’s journey.
between wine and whine … had to smile when I read this innocent line slotted in the middle. 🤪

They can be paired

Ah, the whine and wine thing … I used to have long ‘whine, no cheese parties’ with a friend who was terminally ill. It gave space for whining with a bit of humor in it.

Nice for both

Poetry and prose? Rules and regulations versus freedom to write as you please, so I guess free verse inhabits the middle ground!

Indeed, Keith. I enjoy the occasional rhythm and rhyme with structure, but not every day.

Dear Bill,
I choked on my carrot between “sage and schmuck” 😀 As for what’s between black and white? Not much these days.
Love your nuanced take.

Thank you, Rochelle.
I kind of stole a bit-line from “Dream On” (Aerosmith) but changed fools to schmucks, and I love words rooted in Yiddish.
שלום,
