Ring, Buzz, or Hiss

True silence stopped
like ten years ago
Now I miss quiet.

And youthful me,
A silent lad suspected bad
parents of friends
wished me Eddie Haskell.

I heard the word.
Tinnitus ends my silence
that I long to hear again.

Composed from the prompt word “silence” from Lillian at dVerse (click to find and try).

  1. Smiling I am to see the name Eddie Haskell! That was the “not so well thought of friend” of Wally Cleaver on Leave it to Beaver! I am showing my age…I used to watch that as a kid. And at the time, I never thought it odd that June Cleaver wore a pearl necklace and a frilly apron when working in the kitchen….even though my mother didn’t! I like the first stanza’s recognition that silence is different from quiet. So glad you posted to the prompt!

  2. Bill, I keep coming back to “True silence stopped / like ten years ago” because it feels so blunt and final. “Tinnitus ends my silence” feels almost tragic.

It hits me personally too. My father lost most of his hearing from life-saving antibiotics in the 70s and lived with constant ringing, so I think of him here.

    Much love,
    David

  3. I get this too, its worse when I am stressed, but I have got so used to it I hardly notice the constant sort of buzz I hear – until sometimes, it just stops, and I hear silence! It doesn’t last long though….

  4. one doesn’t hear it until it comes and stays… some days it occupies and takes over… i wonder how does one occupy a sense that was God-given? there is no pill there is no drink … it pokes and prods every minute every second… how does one get use to a constant noisy companion? i wish you well….
