Ethereal Duets – NaPo 2025 Day Twenty-Four

With a week of NaPo yet to go, I’ve been challenged to write a poem that involves people making music together. My poem was to reference (via lyric or line) a song or poem that is important to me.

So far, I have enjoyed this month’s ekphrastic theme with its focus on art and music. I write a lot of poems that way and music is often the focus of my books or sections in them.

Good Intentions

Everything changes.
We do good things or bad things
We lose control of ourselves,
of romance and love. Marriage?

She decided to marry his photograph.
Instead she got the real James,
but did he ever find the real Carly?
Was there ever smooth sailing?
Or was there just changed character?

Celeb marriage stats aside,
was there ever hope? Some say, nope.
But the Mockingbird song,
a duet of spirited promises
that neither writer wrote,
nailed a few minutes
and held my imagination
more than 50 years later.

“Listen now and understand
She’s gonna find me some piece of mind, yeah
And if that piece of mind won’t stay
I’m gonna get myself a better way.”

It’s just a song. One of many.
It was just a couple way back when.
One of many more.
Saying (yeah, yeah) no, no, no, no….

Look both ways and wonder why. Wonder how. Broken cannot be fixed.
Mind the gaps because in the end, only lawyers and undertakers make a profit.
