Ted Strutz contributed a photo of shoes for this week’s #FF prompt. As she does each week, the wonderful water lady in the purple lane, Rochelle, has challenged us to write a micro-fiction story (≤100 words) and to post the same among the squares of honor.
To join us, click on Ted’s pic and walk right on over to Madam’s blog page to get all laced up on the path to a successful Friday Fictioneers career. The pay ain’t great but the benefits are awesome.

Her mother said, “It’s time. Get your shoes on. Let’s go so you can sing them to tears.”
Angelina replied, “I’ll sing for America, Mama—mostly for Simon. I sing barefoot.
“What if you step on a nail? Have you had your tetanus shot?”
“Singing barefoot is what I do. It promotes singing, and people love it. So, please; no shoes.
Father, help me.”
Father smiles. “Angel, this is Norway. It’s January. Wear the boots. Before you take the stage, remove your socks and boots. We will be there to hear you make them cry.”
The angel wore the boots.

Look both ways and dress appropriately.
Mind the gaps and listen to the lady sing.

Singers who also often sang barefoot include Linda Ronstadt, Patti LaBelle, Bjork, Deana Carter, Kelly Clarkson, Joss Stone, Shakira, Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, Colbie Calliat, Jewel, Krist Novoselic, Carly Simon (often but not always). If this Angelina Jordan video doesn’t make you feel something, put your shoes on and leave.

And k.d. lang and Cesaria Evora…
Wonderful story, Bill. And can she sing, or what?

Thank you, Ian. The ones that really shocked me most were the barefoot marathon runners. Yikes!

I only recall one barefoot singer, Sandie Shaw. And wasn’t there a tennis player? Evonne Goolagong? It sounds very liberating, particularly the way my feet are these days.

All I remember was Sandie Shaw – I didn’t realise there were so many.

I read an article claiming that it makes their singing better. Interesting hypothesis IMO.

Lovely story, a perfect twist on the messy shoes and boots.
I’ve seen this video before, and was just as spellbound as I was the first time. What a gift, and she’s humble with it. Amazing.

Like a couple of others, I too immediately thought of Sandie Shaw who won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1967!

WOW … What a voice? Excellent!!!
I didn’t know so many singers sang barefoot.
My hubby has deaf uncles. They’re barefoot at parties.
It helped them feel the beat of the music so they can dance.
Perhaps, the singers can fell the music as they sing. Great story …
Have a good weekend … Isadora 😎

You were right. This and 2 others were in the spam. I set the free. Here is my response so that others can see it here.
I have read reasons for it. But in her case, there is a youtube about how, when she was very young, she met a child who had no shoes and admired hers. She gave the other little girl her shoes and has been singing barefoot ever since.

LOve this one Bill ❤️(Also, Sandie Shaw from the UK used to sing barefooted – of ‘Puppet on String’ fame)

Dear Bill,
With a voice like that, if she wants to sing barefoot, let her! Sweet story.

I’ve heard of barefoot grape-treading, but not singing. Maybe I should try that.

Seems so strange to hear that voice coming out of a 13 year-old’s body. Cannot imagine what she’ll sound like in a few years. Nice to hear that song sung gently like that instead of the Queen or Wayne’s World style. Love your story also. Happy she listened to her dad.

I enjoyed it too. She is 17 now. I also enjoy the Petersen family bluegrass version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_XVrm6zXmw
