In First Place
I’ve heard,
hold my beer and watch this.
Said it myself.
Miraculously,
I survived
to tell you
of my teenage temerity,
disregarding risk,
contempt for danger.
Like others, I was certain I’d live
forever.
Also, like survivors,
I now know I will not.
I want to go out in a blaze of glory,
not drenched in tomfoolery. Therefore,
I shall decline all qualifying events
for next year’s Darwin Awards.
Look both ways for the consequences of your own confidence.
Mind the gaps for the parenthetical excuses of fools.
ahahahah It’s fun, however, to remember the days when we believed we’d live forever.

It is. But dang, I scare myself with the stupid shit I did.

We live. We learn. We remember (and we shake our heads at ourselves and at the youngsters who roll eyes at us for it …).

Coincidence? Maybe so.

Ah yes… the invincibility of youth! Thankfully, for most of us, reason makes its way into our psyches… most of us 😉

Thank you, Dale.
I read recently (Bill Bryson) that number one cause of death among teenager is accidents. And the number one cause of accidents is being around other teenagers. 🙂 I agree.

I joke about spending the first 50 years trying to kill myself and the second 50 trying to stay alive. Anyway, here I am. 🙂

Oy!
Guess some people miscalculate how long that lifetime is…

The idiom goes, “If I knew I was gunna live so long, I’d have taken better care of myself.” 🙂

Great poem, Bill. Such a good use of the prompt word. Now I want to know what it was you got up to! 🙂

We’ve all been there. I’m not sure which is worse, looking back on my antics, or watching my young adults sons’.

We certainly have, Michelle.
Oh dear, the guilt of the ‘sins of the father.’ 🙂
